Current Research Projects

Middent's current book project, Hablemos de cine peruano: Film Criticism and Peruvian National Cinema, demonstrates the cultural power of periodicals on defining concepts of a nascent “national cinema” and argues that Peruvian critics associated with the film journal Hablemos de cine directly influenced the trajectory of local filmmaking in Peru from the 1960s to the turn of the 21st Century by favoring films that catered to more traditional narrative and cinematic structures than the more militant aesthetics and themes that characterized most other Latin American films of the period.

He is also co-editing (with Tamara Falicov, University of Kansas) a collection of translated film writing by Latin American film critics.
