National Council of La Raza

visit www.nclr.org The National Council of La Raza created the Ruben Salazar Award, named in honor of The Los Angeles Times journalist killed in 1970 by a police tear gas projectile while he was covering a Chicano march in East Los Angeles. The Ruben Salazar Award is given each year to an individual who has dedicated his or her life to promoting a positive portrayal of Latino historical, political, economic and cultural contributions to United States' society. LAMP features people who have received that award for excellence in journalism.

[NLCR has also sponsored the American Latino Media Arts (ALMA) awards to recognize the positive portrayal of Latinos images in the film and TV industries of the United States.]
