Latinos and Media Project
The National Council of La Raza created the Ruben Salazar Award, named in honor of The Los Angeles Times journalist killed in 1970 by a police tear gas projectile while he was covering a Chicano march in East Los Angeles. The Ruben Salazar Award is given each year to an individual who has dedicated his or her life to promoting a positive portrayal of Latino historical, political, economic and cultural contributions to United States' society. LAMP features people who have received that award for excellence in journalism.
[NLCR has also sponsored the American Latino Media Arts (ALMA) awards to recognize the positive portrayal of Latinos images in the film and TV industries of the United States.]
